Every day, millions of people depend on the skill, expertise, and commitment of public safety telecommunications professionals who help save countless lives by responding to emergency calls, dispatching emergency professionals and equipment, and providing moral support to citizens in distress. The term “9-1-1” is often associated with rapid emergency response, poise under pressure, aid and compassion in times of distress, and critical decision-making within seconds. Many people don’t stop to think about the seemingly nameless, faceless individuals who answer 9-1-1’s calls until they experience actual emergencies themselves. These telecommunicators make the difference between life and death in many instances.
Emergency Communications Operators are responsible for; the reception of telephone and 9-1-1 calls; the dispatch of police, fire, and medical assistance; and the handling of requests for information from various teletype services.
Some functions of the Emergency Communications Operator include, but are not limited to:
- Answer telephone and 911 calls for service.
- Make computer entries.
- Assist the public.
- Handle emergency and routine complaints by providing assistance as needed.
- Dispatch radio calls to field personnel.
- Perform functions associated with Computer Aided Dispatch. Be able to maintain manual unit status controls when CAD is out of service.
- Perform functions associated with MCT dispatch and teletype.
- Have a working knowledge of the equipment in the Communications Section.
- Respond to requests for information that require the input and retrieval of data from the NCIC/FCIC/CJNet systems.
- Be able to read street maps, and have general knowledge of the geographical area of Winter Park and surrounding areas.
- Assist with the training of new employees when requested.

Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, a polygraph, psychological exam, physical exam, and drug screen will be conducted.
