Opening with a magnificent chorus that combines despair at the death of Jesus with faith in His triumph over death, the St. John Passion dramatically tells of the betrayal, capture, crucifixion, and death of Jesus and is interspersed with chorales that comment on these events, including recitatives and arias that bid farewell to Jesus and conclude with a choral exhortation to “rest in peace.”
